During coronavirus lockdown in New York City, I’ve been aching to create in the most hands-on, meditative ways, mostly away from digital screens. I cut up some old velvet curtains and started embroidering text messages received from loved ones during quarantine—little notes guiding me during this strange and disconnected time. At first I struggled with this newfound domesticity. I think of myself as work-oriented, but now I’m trying to embrace this side of myself, too, and honor the art and value inherent in the traditionally “domestic.”
